Country Info

Cyprus is the third largest island of the Mediterranean Sea . It is an Orthodox nation with several communities, including a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot Community. The official languages are Greek, English, and Turkish, with the first two being widely used across the island. The democratically elected government consists of a President and a 12-member cabinet of Ministers, as well as a 56-seat Parliament. The official currency of the country as of January 1 st 2008 is the Euro.

“Unfortunately, the country experienced the brutality of a Turkish military invasion in the summer of 1974 and has been divided ever since. The Turkish army continues to wrongfully and unlawfully hold 38% of the country. More than 200,000 people became refugees overnight due to the invasion and more than 1500 people are still considered “Missing”. Nicosia , the country's capital, is the only divided capital of Europe .

The country, as a whole, was admitted in the European Union as of May 1 st 2004, and even though the recognised and legally elected government does not control 38% of the country, the residents of the north that do choose to have a Cyprus Passport and recognise the official government are also entitled to the same rights as any other European citizen.

Cyprus will start using Euros as of January 1 st 2008.
